Thomas Melia and British Road Services

Thomas Melia eventually took the position of ‘Group Superintendent’ for the Bolton and Bury Group of British Road Services. However, before this was offered, he effectively had to apply for his own position; all prospective BRS employees were expected compete for roles in this new nationalised entity. More senior members of BRS might well have argued that it was also a necessary process because the accountabilities were greater, and that there was a need to be transparent and fair to all interested parties. It is possible that four or five former managing directors of local former private sector haulage companies could have been interested in the post.
